2024 - Dark and Perilous Times

A strange interlude: I was perusing the major UK newspapers this morning, full of gloom, doom, and political sleaze as usual, when my mind drifted to the line from William Shakespeare's Henry VI, Part 2, Act IV, Scene 2, that says, "Let's kill all the lawyers."

The full quote is: "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers."

Many commentators interpret this line as a criticism of how lawyers maintain the "privilege" of the "wealthy and powerful."

On its front page today, the Financial Times reported an "IMF Warning":

"Global public debt is expected to surpass $100tn for the first time this year, highlighting the enormous surge in government borrowing since the onset of the pandemic, the IMF said yesterday. Debt was also set to near 100% of global GDP by the end of the decadeā€¦" (FT, Wed, 16 Oct 2024)

If Shakespeare were alive today, and reviewing our ruling elite since the "Boomer" dawn, I think he might well say: "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers, the bankers, and the politicians too."

Another quote crept in unbidden:

1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,
7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
(2 Timothy 3:1-7, KJV Bible)

That certainly sums up the elite and today nicely...

2024 - Sheesh, we are indeed living in dark and perilous times, with no sign of a new and better dawn on the horizonā€¦

Starmer? He's not my PM... and he's not 68% of the voter's PM either...
