Appointment in Samarra

He described being rudely jostled by a stranger who, upon turning around, revealed himself to be none other than Death! The dark figure gestured threateningly toward the servant, sending shivers of panic down his spine. And the servant ran.

Fearing for his life, the servant begged the merchant to lend him his fastest horse so he could escape to the city of Samarra, believing Death couldn't find him there. Alarmed by his distress, the merchant agreed, and the servant quickly left upon the horse, desperate to evade a grim fate.

Concerned by the servant's disquieting story, the merchant decided to investigate further. He went to the marketplace, where he was astonished to see Death strolling among the crowd.

Gathering his courage, he approached Death and boldly asked about the threatening gesture directed towards his servant.

In response, Death smiled strangely and then calmly explained that the gesture was not one of menace but rather of surprise. He revealed that he was genuinely taken aback to encounter the servant in Baghdad, as he had an unavoidable appointment with him in Samarra that very night!
