Biden's "black woman" gaffe

Goodness, it's easy to make verbal blunders when you're 81 - Joe Biden refers to himself as a "black woman" in his latest gaffe, sparking backlash from donors and causing fundraising concerns...

Pressure is growing for Joe Biden to drop out of the US presidential race after he made a verbal slip during a radio interview, mistakenly referring to himself as a “black woman.”

Biden, 81, has been causing concern with his tendency to make verbal gaffes throughout the election campaign. His unsteady performance during a recent CNN TV debate (27 Jun 2024) with Donald Trump raises significant worries about the future of the Democratic Party and its prospects in the upcoming presidential race.

During an interview with WURD radio (03 Jul 2024) in Philadelphia, Biden spoke about his pride in working with Vice President Kamala Harris but made a regrettable mistake in his statement. He mistakenly referred to himself as the "first vice president, first black woman…” before correcting to “to serve with a black president.” He also mentioned his pride in his involvement with the first black woman on the Supreme Court, Ketanji Brown-Jackson.

"I'm proud to be, as I said, the first Vice President, the first black woman to serve with a black President," he stumbled. "Proud of the ... first black woman on the Supreme Court. There's so much that we can do because together, we can, there's nothing... Look, this is the United States of America."

Campaign spokesperson Ammar Moussa later clarified Biden’s remarks: “It was clear what President Biden meant when he was talking about his historic record, including a record number of appointments to the federal bench. This is not news, and the media has passed the point of absurdity here.”

Following the 27 June 2024 CNN debate with Trump, two-thirds of the viewers perceived Biden's performance as weaker. Additionally, his remarks about 'beating Medicare' were met with strong criticism and were not well-received.

As a result, some donors are reportedly considering withdrawing their support for Biden. Abigail Disney, the granddaughter of Roy Disney, expressed her intention to stop contributing to the party unless Biden is replaced at the top of the ticket. She emphasised that her decision was based on "realism," not "disrespect."

If Biden were to step aside, the Democratic Party would face a challenging and unprecedented task of finding a replacement for the November vote. However, potential candidates like Kamala Harris, Gavin Newsom, and Michelle Obama could bring a new wave of optimism and energy to the party.

Despite concerns about his age and continuing blunders, Biden has shown unwavering commitment to his campaign. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has acknowledged these concerns but reassured the public that Biden has no intention of withdrawing from the race, stating that "the president is resolute, and he is staying in the race." This should reassure his supporters about his determination to lead the country.
