Church of England Plans to "Woke" Re-brand

An interesting item has just blown in - I wonder what God has to say? After all, it is His Church...

A recent study revealed that the Church of England is contemplating a "Woke Modern" rebranding strategy that involves replacing the term "church" with more contemporary language such as "community." This potential rebranding initiative is being considered at Lambeth Palace to update the language in establishing new worshipping communities and congregations.

The study, conducted by the Centre for Church Planting Theology and Research, focused on analysing the language employed by 11 dioceses to describe new churches. It was noted that over the past decade, these dioceses collectively established 900 new churches, none of which primarily used the term "church plant."

The report's author, Reverend Dr. Will Foulger, highlighted that among the 11 dioceses examined, six used the term "worship," two used "congregation," and seven used "community" to describe these new worshipping communities. This shift in terminology reflects the evolving language and communication strategies within the Church of England.

However, not all clergy members are in favour of this potential rebranding. Dr Giles Fraser, the vicar at St. Anne's in Kew, expressed scepticism, stating that the reluctance to use the term "church" is driven by an unwarranted desire to appear more "modern and relevant." In an article for UnHerd, Dr. Fraser remarked, "The Church has given up on church. Not since Prince became Squiggle has there been such a daft revision."

In response to these considerations, a spokesperson for the Church of England emphasised that the reduced use of the term "church" when describing "new worshipping communities" is driven by the recognition that forms of worship can exist beyond traditional brick-and-mortar church structures.
