Donald Trump - Assassination Attempt 13 July 2024

Donald Trump was injured in an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Sat, 13 July 2024, resulting in the deaths of a spectator and the gunman...

Donald Trump was shot in the ear during an attack while giving a speech to supporters in Butler, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh. The ex-president ducked and was shielded by Secret Service agents. He was then escorted offstage with a bloodied face, but he raised his fist and shouted "Fight" as the crowd cheered "USA."

"Blooded but unbowed"

The sniper, identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, was killed by security forces.

One person in the crowd was killed, and two people were critically injured after the gunman fired "multiple shots" from an "elevated position" from outside the rally venue, said the Secret Service.

The FBI has named the attacker - shot dead by security forces - as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, who, according to state records, was a registered Republican.

Writing on his Truth Social platform, Mr Trump said he was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of his right ear.

He said: "I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin," he said on social media.

"Much bleeding took place, so I realised then what was happening."

He added, "I want to thank the United States Secret Service and all of law enforcement for their rapid response."

Extending condolences to the families of the other casualties, he said: "It is incredible that such an act can take place in our country."

After getting checked out at a local medical centre, Mr Trump returned to New Jersey. As he left his plane, he quickly waved to the people.

His eldest son, Donald Trump Jr, mentioned that his father "is in great spirits."

The attack was the most severe attempt to kill a president or presidential candidate since Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981.

The Biden campaign announced that it was stopping all messages to supporters and working to pull all its TV ads as soon as possible.

Many Republicans quickly sought to blame the violence on Mr Biden and his allies, arguing that attacks on Mr Trump as a threat to democracy had created a toxic environment.

They highlighted Mr Biden's comment to donors on 8 July: "It's time to put Trump in the bullseye."
