Eczema and Psoriasis Remedies

Eczema and psoriasis are long-term skin conditions that can lead to discomfort and irritation. Both conditions result in dry, tight, red, inflamed, and itchy skin but have unique symptoms and characteristics. Despite their differences, natural remedies are available to alleviate the symptoms associated with these conditions...

  1. Psoriasis tends to have thicker, more defined plaques with silvery scales.
  2. Eczema is more likely to cause intense itching and oozing blisters.

1. Eczema Symptoms

  • Dry, sensitive skin: Often feels rough and can be easily irritated.
  • Red, inflamed skin: Commonly appears in skin folds, including the inside of elbows, behind knees, and under the bust in women.
  • Itching: Can be severe, especially at night.
  • Rashes: May develop into small, raised bumps that can ooze and crust over.
  • Thickened, cracked skin: Over time, affected areas can become thick and leathery.
  • Swelling: Inflammation can cause the skin to swell.

2. Psoriasis Symptoms

  • Red patches of skin: Often covered with thick, silvery scales.
  • Dry, cracked skin: Can bleed and be painful.
  • Itching and burning: This may cause a burning or stinging sensation.
  • Thickened nails: Nails can become thick, pitted, or ridged.
  • Joint pain: Some people with psoriasis also develop psoriatic arthritis, which causes joint pain and swelling.
  • Location: Commonly appears on the scalp, elbows, knees, and lower back.

If you’re experiencing symptoms of either condition, consult a dermatologist for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Other Tissue Salts for Skin

  • Calcium Fluoride (Calc Fluor): Thisis a tissue strengthener that improves skin elasticity and can help improve varicose veins and haemorrhoids.
  • Calcium Sulphate (Calci Sulph): This eliminates waste materials and purifies the blood. It can be helpful when you have boils, moist or dry eczema, herpetic pustules or other eruptions. Calc Sulph can help eruptions quickly resolve after they have come to a head.

  • Turmeric Creams: Some studies have shown that turmeric creams can reduce skin scaling and itchiness.
  • Homemade Paste: Mix one teaspoon of turmeric with two teaspoons of dairy, almond, or coconut milk. Apply this to dry skin, leave it for 10 minutes, rinse with lukewarm water, and follow with a moisturiser.

Avoid Eczema/Psoriasis Triggers

Many things in the environment trigger eczema and psoriasis flares:

  • Outdoor allergens (like grasses.
  • Dust mites indoors.
  • Harsh chemicals like dyes and scents.
  • Chemicals in the water you bathe in.

Decrease exposure:

  • Get a filter for shower water.

Cannabidiol (CBD) Products

  • Cannabidiol-infused Skincare Products: They may help treat eczema and psoriasis. The skin has its cannabinoid system, and topical CBD activates these receptors. Caution: Many people react negatively to CBT products - especially those on natural remedies - so immediately discontinue if any adverse symptoms manifest.

Dead Sea Salts

  • Bathing in this salt solution is well-tolerated and may improve skin barrier function and decrease roughness and inflammation.

Essential Oils

  • Add one or two drops of lavender or rose essential oil to a lukewarm bath.
  • Alternatively, dilute the oil with a carrier oil like sweet almond or jojoba and apply directly to the skin.

Herb Teas

  • Good stress management can reduce the chance of a flare-up, and drinking calming teas, like chamomile, lavender, and lemon balm, before retiring can soothe the nervous system.
  • Consider brewing the tea, and once it has cooled to lukewarm, use it as a warm compress on affected areas.
