Fatty Liver Remedies
A fatty liver can exacerbate high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. Diet and lifestyle modifications are the most effective ways to control a fatty liver…
Fatty liver disease is when excess fat builds up in the liver, causing inflammation and scarring.
There are two types of fatty liver - 1) alcoholic fatty liver and 2) non-alcoholic fatty liver.
- Alcoholic fatty liver is caused by excessive consumption of alcohol.
- Non-alcoholic fatty liver is unrelated to alcohol use and is typically caused by a poor diet, high intake of fats, refined carbs, and a lack of physical activity.
Health conditions that can increase the risk of fatty liver include obesity, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidaemia (an imbalance of lipids such as low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), triglycerides, and high-density lipoprotein (HDL)).
Symptoms
Not everyone has noticeable symptoms; however, when there are, they can include:
- Abdominal swelling
- Cognitive problems
- Dark urine
- Easy bruising and bleeding
- Enlarged spleen
- Fatigue
- Itchy skin
- Jaundice (yellow skin or eyes)
- Mild, then increasing liver pain
- Nausea and vomiting
- Not feeling well or malaise
- Pain or discomfort in the upper-right belly area
- Persistent itchiness
- Personality changes
- Poor appetite
- Red palms
- Severely itchy skin
- Shortness of breath
- Sleep disorders
- Spider-like blood vessels just beneath the skin's surface
- Swelling (oedema) in the feet and lower legs
- Unintended weight loss
- Weakness
- Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice)
Recommendations
- Swedish Bitters (Highly Recommended): Bitters boost the liver by eliminating toxins and detoxification, coordinating the metabolism of sugar and fats, and helping release gallbladder-supporting hormones like cholecystokinin (CCK).
- Milk Thistle (Highly Recommended): Clinical studies have confirmed the hepatoprotective effects of milk thistle. Research suggests that silymarin may help manage the progression of liver conditions such as alcoholic hepatitis, cirrhosis, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
- CBD - Cannabidiol (800 - 1,000 mg gummies recommended): This restores liver function, normalises 5-HT levels, and improves brain pathology by normalising brain function. Cannabidiol's positive effects result from a combination of its actions in the liver and the brain.
- Grapefruit: Grapefruit Juice with Apple Cider Vinegar added (take 1st thing in the morning)
- Olive Oil: add extra virgin olive oil to the diet
- Omega-3: Fatty fish and supplement at 1,000 mg daily
- Avocado: Oil and Fruit
- Coenzyme Q10: 100 - 200 mg daily
- Garlic: 1,000 mg garlic supplement daily
- Coffee: 2 to 4 cups daily
- Dandelion tea: 2 to 4 cups daily
- Gentle Exercise: 20-minute walk daily
- Green Tea: 4 cups daily
- Low-Fat Diet
- Maintain a healthy weight
- No Alcohol
- No Salt
- No Sugar
- Reduce tobacco exposure
- Sleep: Get at least seven hours of quality sleep a night. Get better sleep by avoiding caffeine and alcohol before bedtime, investing in blackout curtains, and reducing stress and anxiety (hypnosis and visualisation programs)
- Tofu: Soy protein, soy foods and soy milk
- Vit C: 1,000 mg 4 x daily
- Vit E: 400 - 80-800 iu daily
- Probiotics (live-culture yoghurt): These help improve gut health and support liver function. They can also reduce inflammation and improve insulin balance.
- Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA): This is an antioxidant that helps to protect the liver from damage and also improves insulin sensitivity
- N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC): A powerful antioxidant that helps to protect the liver from damage. It is also a precursor to glutathione, a compound that helps flush out toxins from the liver.
The Following Can Also be Considered
- Rosemary, Peppermint, Basil, Lavender, Oregano, and Sage Essential Oils: These contain ursolic and carnosic acid, which help prevent lipotoxicity (too much fat in the body, causing harm) and improving lipid homeostasis, keeping the right balance of fat in the body for good health
- Gingko biloba: This contains compounds such as ginkgolides and bilobalides, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that can regulate fatty acid metabolism in the liver and reduce fat accumulation.
- Ginseng: This helps to improve liver enzyme levels and reduce hepatic inflammation and fibrosis.
Implement a Liver-Friendly Diet
- Eat various liver-healthy foods: Whole grains, fruits and vegetables, lean protein, dairy, and healthy fats. Grapefruit, blueberries, nuts, and fatty fish benefit the liver.
- Fibre: This is essential for good liver function. Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are sources of fibre that should be incorporated into the diet.
- Hydration: Ensure you drink enough water daily (spring of filtered - never raw tap water) to keep the liver in tip-top shape.
- Limit fatty, sugary, and salty food intake: Foods high in fat, sugar, and salt can affect liver function. Fried and fast foods can also adversely affect liver health.
- Drink Coffee: This has been shown to lower the risk of liver diseases such as cirrhosis and liver cancer. It also works by preventing the accumulation of fat and collagen, two factors in fatty liver disease.
- Limit Alcohol intake.
- Quit Smoking.
Conclusion
Fatty liver disease generally has no apparent symptoms. Sometimes, it advances to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis and cirrhosis.
There may be fatigue, weakness, and liver pain. Cirrhosis can lead to nausea and vomiting, easy bruising and bleeding, and jaundice.
Complications can be life-threatening and include liver cancer, cognitive problems, and dysfunction of the lungs or kidneys.
