Kamala Harris – who is she?

With Joe Biden stepping down as the Democratic Party’s nominee for president, the field will open to other nominees for the November election. However, Biden has backed Vice President Kamala Harris, and other prominent Democrats have also rallied around her candidacy...

Kamala Harris says she is looking forward to accepting the Democratic nomination as she secures the support of enough delegates.

Kamala Harris Nominee
Harris was born on 20 Oct 1964 in Oakland, California
Politician, Lawyer, and Author.

Her father, an economist, and her mother, a cancer specialist, met as graduate students at the University of California, Berkeley. Kamala Harris recalled they spent much time "marching and shouting about this thing called justice." Kamala often speaks about her upbringing with parents deeply involved in the civil rights movement.

Harris, black and of South Asian descent, was the first female vice president and person of colour to hold that office in the United States. A graduate of Howard University, she is also the first person from a historically Black college or university to hold the office of either president or vice president.

In 2016, Harris was elected to the U.S. Senate after serving two terms as California's Attorney General. During her Senate campaign, she highlighted her efforts in confronting big banks during the mortgage crisis, addressing the exploitation of students by "for-profit colleges," and holding environmental wrongdoers accountable.

She’s talked for years about recidivism and criminal justice reform and pushed for a different approach to non-violent crimes that emphasises rehabilitation instead of severe, one-size-fits-all punishment. She calls it "smart on crime".

Recidivism is when a person repeats an undesirable behaviour despite facing negative consequences or being trained to control it. This term is often used in the context of criminal behaviour, referring to a person's tendency to continue committing crimes even after being punished. It can also be defined as a tendency to relapse into a previous condition or mode of behaviour.

As vice president, Biden has tasked Harris with taking on some of his administration's most difficult challenges, including securing the nation’s borders. As the presiding officer of the U.S. Senate, she has cast many tie-breaking votes on legislation supported by Democrats, who are defending a narrow majority in both houses of Congress in the November 2024 elections.

Harris, 59, is married to Los Angeles lawyer Douglas Emhoff.
