Thousands Demonstrate in London - 27 Jul 2024
On Sat, 27 Jul 2024, Central London saw significant demonstrations, "Uniting The Kingdom", led by right-wing activist Tommy Robinson (whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon) and counter-protests organised by groups including "Stand Up to Racism" and former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn’s "Peace & Justice Project"...
Thus, three protest marches, with thousands of participants each, took place simultaneously: 1) a Stand Up To Racism march, 2) a Uniting The Kingdom demonstration (organised by English Defence League founder Tommy Robinson), and 3) a Trans Pride protest.
The main event, Uniting the Kingdom, began at the Royal Courts of Justice at 12:45 pm and ended at Trafalgar Square, where Robinson screened a controversial film.
The demonstrators required the deployment of about 1,000 police officers to maintain order. Despite efforts to keep the peace, several arrests were made, and it was also reported that several videos depicting racist and anti-Muslim chants were being investigated.
The police had already used their powers under the Public Order Act to separate the opposing groups amid fears of severe disruption. Chief Superintendent Colin Wingrove, who oversaw the operation, warned at the start of the day that police would "intervene decisively" to deal with protesters who break the strict conditions about when and where to demonstrate.
In what was advertised as the "biggest patriotic rally the UK has ever seen," thousands of protesters filled the Strand, wearing clothing and holding flags depicting the Union, English, Scottish, and Welsh flags. The demonstrators were heard chanting "England," "Rule Britannia," and “We want our country back,” as well as Mr Robinson’s name. Israeli flags were also seen being waved at the event.
One demonstrator was seen climbing on top of a phone box, while others held placards that read “Not far right, just right”.
A few hundred yards away, Stand Up To Racism demonstrators marched from Russell Square to Whitehall, holding up placards calling for the end of British weapons supplies to Israel.
The counter-protest, which started at 1:30 pm, was supported by the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and 11 other trade unions, Jeremy Corbyn’s Stop the War Coalition, Peace & Justice Project, and Unite Against Fascism.
No serious police casualties were sustained.
