Tonsillitis Remedies

Tonsillitis is when tonsils become infected - bacterial and viral infections can be the cause. Here are some simple alternative remedies to help with the condition.

Symptoms

  • Bad breath
  • Ear pain
  • Elevated temperature
  • Fever
  • Hoarse voice
  • Inflamed tonsils
  • Pain when swallowing
  • Sore/inflamed throat
  • Swollen tonsils

Tissue Salts

  • Ferr Phos - The first remedy. Tonsils red and inflamed, painful on swallowing (alternate with Kali Mur when inflamed or swollen).
  • Kali Mur - The second remedy. As soon as there is any swelling. Tonsils spotted white or grey.
  • Silica - Periodical tonsillitis and when suppuration threatens.
  • Calc Sulph - During the last stage, when purulent matter discharges.
  • Calc Phos - Chronic swelling of the tonsils, causing pain on opening the mouth, with difficulty in swallowing (alternate with Calc Fluor for chronic enlargement).
  • Calc Fluor - Large indurated tonsils, relaxed throat and elongation of the uvula.

Dosage - 4 x tabs hourly in early stages of acute attack; then two hourly. Chronic cases - 4 x tabs, 3 x daily

Combin Q can be used as an alternative to the above.

Supplements

  • Vit A - 10,000 - 20,000 iu (less for children), 1 - 3 x daily for 5 x days; stop for 2 x days
  • Vit C - 1,000 mg, 3 x daily for adults; 500 mg, 3 x daily for children
  • Vit E - 400 iu, 1 - 3 daily for adults; half this dose for children
  • Omega-3 - 1,000 mg daily
  • Acidophilus - 3 x caps, 3 x daily (live culture yogurt can also be taken)
  • Garlic Caps - 1,000 mg daily
  • Zinc orotate - 100 mg daily for adults; 15 - 30 for children
  • Selenium - 200 mcg daily for adults; 100 mcg for children

Other Recommendations

  • Hydration - Drink plenty of spring or filtered water. Alternatively substitute with diluted fruit juices.
  • Gargle with Salt water - dissolve 1/2 teaspoon of salt in 125 ml of warm water. Gargle and swish the salt water through the mouth for several seconds, spit it out, and with fresh warm water.
  • Liquorice lozenges - liquorice as an ingredient has strong anti-inflammatory benefits, and can help to soothe tonsils and a sore throat.
  • Herb teas (liquorice recommended) with raw honey (Manuka recommended) - fennel tea (strong anti-inflammatory), green tea (anti-oxidant), chamomile, peppermint, and ginger teas are also recommended.
  • Ibuprofen - Take 4 hourly to ease pain and inflammation. Paracetamol can also be used.
  • Peppermint Aroma Oil - Put a few drops on a toothbrush and gently brush teeth - Repeat morning and night. This can be done after normal teeth brushing. Alternatively use Tea Tree Oil.
  • Hydrogen Peroxide - 12 drops of 12% Food Grade in 1/2 glass (125 ml) of spring water. Gargle, swish, and swallow. Repeat every 4 hours.
  • Popsicles and Ice Chips - cold can be very effective in treating the pain, inflammation, and swelling that accompanies tonsillitis. Popsicles, frozen juices, yogurt, and ice cream can be helpful, especially for children.
  • Humidifier - This can help to relieve a sore throat if the air is dry, or the mouth is dry as a result of the tonsillitis. Additionally aroma oils can be added - tea tree, lavender, peppermint, and Albas oils are recommended. Humidify 24/7.
